Bynum to provide production, leadership By Adam Powell, CarolinaBlue.com Associate Editor – Rivals.com The play of senior defensive tackle Shelton Bynum will be critical for North Carolina's success this fall on defense. One of the mainstays on the UNC front, and a producer since his true freshman year, Bynum is excited with the way his teammates have been working thus far in training camp. Compared to season's past, Bynum sees more effort and commitment to getting better this August from his teammates. "I'm seeing more commitment, more determination out of everybody," said Bynum. "They've come in, they're ready to work. They're ready to play, everybody knows the defense, there's no question about it; they know what to do. Everybody wants to do it." Bynum credits much of UNC enhanced defensive awareness, along with their willingness to work harder, to the time already put in during the offseason working through the rigorous program implemented by strength and conditioning coach Jeff Connors. "I think it comes with conditioning with Coach Connors. We did a lot of work on exploding with the rubber bands on, which was a lot of resistance, and parachutes, and just being in shape," said Bynum. "It was all of that put together." Although Bynum missed part of Carolina's final two games last fall with a leg injury, he is relatively healthy heading into the 2006 season, and is currently working in training camp to improve his abilities across the board. "I'm just trying to work on technique and the little things; staying low, using the hands, seeing everything, recognizing formations," said Bynum. "I'm just coming along, just working hard, out there running around with the heat on; just working to get ready." |
